Mamluks. al-Zahir Sayf al-Din Jaqmaq, AH 842-857 / AD 1438-1453. Akçe (Silver, 15 mm, 1.70 g, 2 h), Çemişgezek, AH 857 = AD 1453/4. Within a square, ‘lā ilāha illā / Allāh Muḥammad / rasūl Allāh’ (‘There is no deity but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah’ in Arabic); the names of the four Rashidun Caliphs in Arabic in the four surrounding panels: ‘Abūbakr / ʿUmar / ʿUthmān / ʿAlī’. Rev. Within a central circle, ‘ḍarb / Jimishkizāk / sana / 758 [retrograde]’ (‘Struck in Çemişgezek, year 857’ in Arabic); in the margin, barely legible, ‘al-sulṭān al-malik al-ẓāhir Jaqmaq khallada Allāh taʿālā mulkahū’ (‘The Sultan and King al-Zahir Jaqmaq. May Allah, the Exalted, perpetuate his kingdom’ in Arabic). Album A1016 (mislisted under Aynal, AH 857-865 / AD 1453-1461). Extremely rare. Minor deposits and some doubling on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.
